PIAA 85110 115db 400HZ + 500HZ Sports Horn

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

There horns can be installed without a relay even if your vehicle has only one stock horn. Just connect two of them in parallel. Both of them draw 5.4 Amperes and usually one stock horn draws 4-5A. So they will not burn your stock relay.
Regarding the sound, this is typical old American car, low sound. If you want to have a nicer one, buy the same set with 500-600Hz which is also sold at amazon. What I figured out, when you drive, especially on freeway, and signal at someone, they notice your horn sound when it has a higher pitch but not as high as those installed on Japanese small sedans like Civic, Corolla or Mazda 3. Physics of the ear of a human being is that it hears high pitched sound better that a low one from a close range; however, from the far range, it is vise versa. So you need a balance here. Horns with the pitch of 500 - 600 Hz is a good choice. If you combine two or three or four horns, the loudness will increase but not much, the pitch will change if all the horns have different frequencies. And for those who don't know physics: dB = decibels, it is not a measure of loudness, it is intensity of the sound. Thus, a horn with 108dB can sound louder than the one with 115 dB. The PIAAs, both provide intensity of 115dB but both!. My suggestion is to combine them with your stock ones or one (if you have only one) by using automotive relay (12V, 30/40A, SPDT can be bought at Radioshack). Use 20A in-line fuse before the relay. Wiring, I'm not gonna explain it here. Look up google how to to it. There are many posts and DIYs. Also youtube has many videos.

If you want louder horns, buy FIAMM 130dB both high and low tones but you will need a relay to install them. They sound louder than PIAAs but I didn't like their pitch alone nor did I like PIAAs pitch either. So I found solution for myself. I installed 4 horns: two PIAAs (400 and 500 Hz - could be 500 and 600Hz) and two FIAMMs. And of course I needed relay too. Now my Civic sounds differently and people obey! What a nice and loud sound output. It's just BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. Get out of my way!

Coleman 100-Quart Xtreme Wheeled Cooler (Blue)

I had almost purchased a much more expensive portable electric refrigerator until I considered my wiser choice of this and her smaller sister - the 62 quart X-treme Wheel Coleman Cooler. As a Caterer of a Texas themed BBQ Company, these coolers are all advertised what they are intended to do: Fill them generously with ICE, pack with precious dairy and meat products - - they will maintain refrigerated temperatures for days, with no drop in temerature. They are very convenient to tote from my truck with the larger handles than the previous models. I'm extremely satisfied and couldn't be more pleased with Amazon.com and their excellent delivery choices. [...]

Great for a weekend camping trip!
I bought this cooler when I realized we were going to be camping for a weekend and needed to keep food & refreshments cold! It's huge. You'll be able to fit everything you need for sure. Just beware it's very heavy when packed with ice. The handle and wheels are great but remember you have to lift this thing in and out of your car! And remember to shut the lid tight every time. It does not close tightly unless you push it down. We still had ice left after a summer weekend away camping.

So inexpensive, hard to go wrong
This item is quite large and holds a lot of contents. I've had better coolers that retained the cold better. The price is so low, it is hard to even complain. The inside has some of the insulation poking through some holes of some sort, sorta like pin holes that are inside, with insulation coming through. You can probably shave it off with a razor and it doesn't impact the use of the product in any way. But it makes me wonder if this unit was a second? Anyways, the price is right and for most of the year it will be sitting in storage waiting for the next party.

Met my expectations across the board
I was looking for a big cooler that would stay cold during my move. The ice had not even begun to melt after 6 hours of refrigerated and frozen food. This will be a great cooler for parties.

Awsome cooler!
Just came back from 6 days on the Olympic Peninsula. We put two blocks of ice into this cooler, and upon returning home, there was still some left (about 4 inches of the block thickness). It really works!

Lowepro Nova 1 AW Camera Bag (Gray)

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

I purchased this bag for my Canon Powershot SX110. I had already bought a Canon PSC-85 soft case for the camera itself, but I wanted a bag to hold the camera AND all of the supplies that came with the camera. This bag does AND it looks great doing it! It holds the camera IN the Canon case, all the cords, a AA battery charger and extra batteries, as well as a memory card wallet. The user manual even fit in the zippered pocket on the back. It does more than I expected. I especially like how sturdy and well padded the bag is, and the shoulder strap is very well made with a non-slip cushion. I believe it to be worth every penny of the MSRP, but was delighted to find it here at AMAZON for significantly LESS!

Camera bag versitlity
I was looking for an economical carrying case for our service techs. We have 3 wireless credit card terminals. The terminal supplier wanted for their custom made bag. We pruchased 3 cases for .80 through Amazon.

The Lowepro Nova 1 turned out to be a perfect fit for the terminals, charging units and supplies. The price is great for the well constructed durable case.

Fits Canon EOS XSi + 2 lenses perfectly
It fits Canon EOS XSi with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens, plus the EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens. Not much room is left in the main cabin (possibly for one or two filters?) The front pocket is large enough for a small digital camera (e.g. a Canon A95); side pockets are very small. Overall, the bag is large enough to hold my DSLR yet small and portable enough for casual city hunting.

I have not have the chance to try the All Weather cover.

Good quality as expected
Bought this for my Nikon d80. The camera and another lens fit perfectly. There are still room for small accessories such as batteries. However, one should NOT expect to fit another large item such as lens or chargers. I bought this for its compact size, and I am not disappointed.

High Quality Camera Bag
This is a beautiful bag with great attention to detail. My DSLR is quite large (Pentax K10D) so it just fits with its attached lens and one extra. I can fit in some additional items but nothing very large (such as an external flash). As it is small is very discreet so doesn't appear that I am lugging around a dead body. Not recommended for someone who has lots of gear though.

U2 - Rattle & Hum [Blu-ray]

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Great for collection. good video image considering the record date. Wonderful audio. Great interpretation on "sunday bloody sunday".

U2 - Rattle & Hum [Blu-ray]

Description:
A concert movie on an unprecedented scale. Rattle And Hum captures U2 – on and off the stage – during their triumphant Joshua Tree tour. From the giant Technicolor stadium celebrations to the black-and-white intensity of the indoor shows, this is U2 at their best. Follow the group across America, exploring new influences, playing with the legendary B.B. King, on a journey which takes them from Dublin to Graceland, from San Francisco to the streets of Harlem, from The Joshua Tree to Rattle And Hum.
Amazon.com:
Rattle and Hum is not a film for anyone looking for an introduction to Irish band U2's career in the 1980s, but it is a vibrant portrait of an established group making its musical pilgrimage through the America it has always imagined through blues, gospel, and early rock 'n' roll. Filmmaker Phil Joanou (Heaven's Prisoners), a veteran music-video director and maker of the distractingly kinetic Three O'Clock High, finds a suitable outlet for his high energy in this juggernaut of a journey, which finds U2 collaborating with a black gospel choir and B.B. King, recording inside the legendary Sun Records studio, dropping by Graceland, and in a moment of fearlessness, performing the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" to exorcise Charles Manson's sick claim on the song. --Tom Keogh

Better Basics for the Home: Simple Solutions for Less Toxic Living

Better Basics for the Home: Simple Solutions for Less Toxic Living

I've had this book since it was first published and find myself referring to it for one thing or another at least once a week. I use both the housekeeping and personal care recipes. I keep about 10 or 12 staple ingredients on hand, including white vinegar, castile soap, glycerin, and essential oils, and mix things up as needed. I've stopped buying and started making furniture polish, dish washing liquid, bathroom and kitchen cleaners, shampoo, body wash, creams, lotions and potions for the face and body, lip balm, etc.; pretty much anything we need can be whipped up in a flash.

My husband and I both suffer from allergies and asthma and both of our kids have asthma; using natural housekeeping products makes a world of difference for our health and our house is always fresh and clean. Using these homemade products actually makes housework much more enjoyable since I'm not breathing the toxic fumes while I clean. Aside from the health benefits and the joy of living in a clean house, the recipes are very inexpensive and mostly very simple to make. It's very practical to be able to mix up, say, more dish washing liquid when you need it, rather than adding it to a list of things to buy at the store. The author often recommends keeping things in glass jars and bottles, but I do just fine keeping the products I mix up in a reusable plastic squirt or spray bottle. This book seems to contain everything I need for natural home and personal care; I've been happily and faithfully using it for over 10 years now.

Amazon.com Review:
These days, more and more people are saying no to "better living through chemistry" and yes to a lifestyle that is less toxic and more environmentally friendly. This trend toward a more natural lifestyle has become something of a crusade for Annie Berthold-Bond, author of Better Basics for the Home. After developing hypersensitivity to even very low concentrations of chemicals, Berthold-Bond was forced to rid her life of as many toxins as possible. "It wasn't until I had to be away from chemicals that I began to realize how many we lived with. The extent of the contamination is startling--from hair spray and floor wax to dandelion killers and plastic shower curtains and other products that line our hardware stores and supermarket shelves."

This book represents the culmination of her search for a more sustainable lifestyle. Taking her cue from an earlier time, Berthold-Bond, former editor in chief of Green Alternatives for Health and Environment, offers more than 800 simple and practical alternatives to common household toxins, covering everything from skin care to gardening. And the good news is that adopting her suggestions and formulas isn't hard at all. "Mixing up face creams or wood stain isn't much different than cleaning the windows with vinegar, soap, and water instead of using Brand Name X, or making a cake with flour, eggs and milk instead of buying a mix," see asserts. "With a few simple staples we can clean our houses, wash our hair, rid the dog's bed of fleas, and do many other things as well." If you have your doubts, here is her formula for metal polish:

3 teaspoons salt, 1 tablespoon flour, and enough white distilled vinegar to make a paste. Scoop the paste onto a clean sponge, and polish the metal clean. Rinse with hot water and buff dry.

Sure, these days it's literally impossible to lead a life that is completely toxin-free. But you can significantly reduce your exposure, and picking up a copy Better Basics for the Home is a great way to get started.

Fast delivery and great condition!
This product was delivered fast and the book was in the exact condition described. The company was very easy to work with!

A must have for every home
I have read this book several times and it is a must have for every home. Dont be left out in the dark when the time comes and you need this book. Order now!!!!!!

Good reference
I read this book to find scientific support for homemade cleaning products. I didn't find this specific information. However, I understand the GRAS(generally regarded as safe) concept and have utilized some of the recipies, especially for cleaning solutions. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in using non-toxic ingredients for cleaning, lawn and garden and other aspects of homekeeping. It has an excellent resource section at the end of the book that is better than any other book on the subject. I think that your money would be well-spent if you purchased this book.

Non-toxic cleaning
Great book! I love the various remedies to cleaning and disinfecting this book offers. Brilliant!

A Wizard of Earthsea (The Earthsea Cycle, Book 1)

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

I never thought that a 144 page story would take me SO LONG TO READ. Yikes. I planned to read the first three books of the Earthsea series for Jawas Read, Too!'s Summer of Series, but once again I fear I will fail at a challenge. Maybe if I'm lucky the Tombs of Atuan review will be up tomorrow. Fingers crossed. There are a few good, sensible excuses for my painfully long reading of A Wizard of Earthsea: I recently got a summer job and my hours have gone up lately, especially weekend hours which is prime reading time for me, and I have taken a few vacations in which reading was impossible. But then there is the fact of this book simply did not want me to read it quickly. It refused to be read for more than 20 minutes at a time. I blame Ged.

I have been wanting to read a Le Guin book for many moons now. I have heard from a couple people that she is a classic, and everyone must read her before they die. I did some scouting around, like I normally do when I hear such a thing, to see what she has written and if they sound like my thing. The Earthsea trilogy definately sounded like my thing, along with a few of her other books I might pick up later. I put the series of my To Be Read list, but since there were no copies available at my local libraries, I forgot about them. Then I heard about Jawas' Summer of Series. And I found an omnibus edition of the series on Paperback Swap. The stars were aligned. In my defense, I did only receive the omnibus in the middle of June and this challenge is only for the month of June. So there.

Ged was born on the island of Gont, an island known for housing powerful and prominent wizards. Not many from Ged's poor village suspected the great things that he would someday come to do. They couldn't foresee that one day songs would be song of the little ruffian running among the goats. One day, a great wizard living on Gont comes and takes Ged away to live with him. There he tries to show Ged what it means to be a wizard, but he is a slow teacher. Ged soon goes bored, and when he is asked to go to a school for wizards on Roke island, he goes. At the school, he learns tought lessons that shape the rest of his life. He learns one lesson too late and unleashes a dark burden on Earthsea that he must vanquish at once or die trying.

A Wizard of Earthsea is told as a folk tale or legend. The reader is told a certain amount at the beginning of the story about how things will end. I really dislike this way of storytelling because I like a certain amount of mystery in my stories. I know that things will more than likely end up happy. And I know that the protagonist will be superfantasticamazing because if there weren't going to end up being a somebody, why write a story about them? No one wants to read a story about a wizard who sits on his couch all day, using magic to change the channels. But I still want to pretend to be surprised when things work out this way. I like the warm and fuzzy feeling I get when the characters defeat the evil and head back home to their family and friends. This didn't happen to me in a Wizard of Earthsea because I had known all along what would happen.

Despite the feeling of being spoiled, I thought the story was original and entertaining to read. Ged begins his real studies as a wizard with a patient and mysterious wizard called Ogion. I loved Ogion, obviously. How could you not? He was the typical kindly old wizard who knows more than he cares to tell, but only for the good of those around him. He is conscious of the great power he could yield, but he also knows the consequences of everything he does. The greatest part of the story for me was the trials Ged had to go through to learn that exact lesson of consequences and being at peace with oneself as Ogion was. I appreciated how it wasn't an easy thing for him to learn, but how in learning it would make it him an great and powerful user of magic. Some parts of the story, especially towards the end, were very profound and philosophical when discussing the lessons Ged had learned. I think these parts showed what a fantastic author Ms. Le Guin is.

I found Ged to be a complex character, but I did not have much attachment to him. My problem with this was the distance that telling the story as a legend put between the reader and the protagonist. Legends are not too concerned with thoughts and feelings. The story is explained as, "Something happens, Ged reacts, reason he reacts is explained." The reasons were more told than shown in my opinion. Not only that, but important building years of Ged's life are simply skipped over. I couldn't feel a connection with Ged even though I did feel he was a great character; it was an odd feeling. I loved how he wasn't an innocent viction when it came to his school boy enemy, Jasper. He was as much to blame, if not more so, in creating an enemy in Jasper. He imagined things that weren't there, or things that could have easily been overlooked, he brought to the forefront of his mind and obsessed over. These obsessions came to a head when the two boys took their growing power too far because they didn't understand the consequences of what they were doing yet.

The worldbuilding of Earthsea is elaborately over-the-top, and I ate it up. When I first heard if the name Earthsea, I scoffed at its absurdity. I found myself thinking, "Could this author be any more unoriginal? Earth and sea, I wonder where she got those two words from?" I now swallow those words. I love that name now. It makes perfect sense when you create a world filled with only with hundreds and thousands of tiny islands. I found myself thinking that an in-depth look at the politics of these islands would be fantastic, and I thoroughly enjoyed the little snippets Le Guin gave us of each island's world. I was also overjoyed with the close up maps that were interspersed within the book; I needed them desperately. The little islands were sometimes hard to find in the big map, and I like to know exactly where I am in the world. Another important part of the Earthsea world are names. Every single thing, from a wave to an insect, has a true name which you must know to control it. Names are sometimes important parts in fantasy novels involving magic; books like Eragon come to mind. A Wizard if Earthsea took this theme to the extreme. A person, if they wanted to control a person, had to work to find out a person's name, because surely a person would guard that secret with everything they had. It was an interesting concept and added another layer to Le Guin's theme that no power comes without working.

Rating: 7 out of 10. I agree that A Wizard of Earthsea is a classic in the fantasy genre. I have heard some say it paved the way for Harry Potter, which I can, loosely, see. I had a few problems with the story, the main one being how slow going it was for me. I could read the whole Harry Potter series in less days than it took me to read this one book. I will definately pick up more Le Guin books, and I can already tell you that I enjoy the Tombs of Atuan much more.

A Wizard of Earthsea (The Earthsea Cycle, Book 1)

Product Description:
Ged was the greatest sorcerer in all Earthsea,  but once he was called Sparrowhawk, a reckless  youth, hungry for power and knowledge, who tampered  with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow  upon the world. This is the tale of his testing,  how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an  ancient dragon, and crossed death's threshold to  restore the balance.

From the Paperback edition.
Amazon.com Review:
Often compared to Tolkien's Middle-earth or Lewis's Narnia, Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea is a stunning fantasy world that grabs quickly at our hearts, pulling us deeply into its imaginary realms. Four books (A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, and Tehanu) tell the whole Earthsea cycle--a tale about a reckless, awkward boy named Sparrowhawk who becomes a wizard's apprentice after the wizard reveals Sparrowhawk's true name. The boy comes to realize that his fate may be far more important than he ever dreamed possible. Le Guin challenges her readers to think about the power of language, how in the act of naming the world around us we actually create that world. Teens, especially, will be inspired by the way Le Guin allows her characters to evolve and grow into their own powers.

In this first book, A Wizard of Earthsea readers will witness Sparrowhawk's moving rite of passage--when he discovers his true name and becomes a young man. Great challenges await Sparrowhawk, including an almost deadly battle with a sinister creature, a monster that may be his own shadow.

Love My Necklace!
I ordered this magnetic necklace in the hope it would help in my battle with arthritis. Not only have the anti-inflammatory properties worked magnificently, but it is a beautiful piece of jewelry. The pink beads coordinate nicely as I wear a lot of pink. I sometimes wear it around my wrist as a bracelet, sometimes as a necklace.
